Transforming Culture, Accelerating Progress at Sellafield

Sellafield’s Remediation Accelerated Decommissioning (RAD) initiative aimed to create a high-performance, innovation-driven team culture to tackle complex decommissioning challenges efficiently and safely.

ThinkOTB developed and implemented a comprehensive culture and behaviours strategy, focusing on embedding core values, fostering psychological safety, and enabling innovation through structured programmes like The RAD Way leadership series.

Regular culture and wellbeing surveys provided feedback loops for continuous improvement, while culture champions were appointed to model and reinforce positive behaviours across the organisation. These champions, alongside tailored leadership mentoring, created an ecosystem of trust, adaptability, and high engagement, essential for driving performance under pressure​.

​To sustain momentum, RAD introduced reward and recognition schemes such as RAD Smiles, encouraging consistent appreciation of team efforts and aligning rewards with key cultural behaviours. This was supported by quarterly RAD Way events and inspiring leadership workshops that introduced best practices from other high-performing organisations, fuelling fresh thinking and collaboration. A robust stakeholder engagement and communications strategy ensured alignment across the wider organisation, promoting shared vision and ownership of goals.

Together, these initiatives helped build an environment where innovation thrived, collaboration deepened, and the team remained resilient and purpose-driven, delivering measurable progress on Sellafield’s mission to decommission safer and faster​.
